Who needs a safety certificate
In Ontario a Safety Standards Certificate proves a vehicle met the provincial safety standard on the day it was inspected. If any of these describe your situation, you need one before you can plate or transfer the vehicle.
Selling privately
Most private buyers will not complete the deal without a valid certificate, and it is what lets them register the car in their name.
Buying privately
If the seller has not supplied one, you need a certificate to transfer the ownership. It also tells you what you are actually buying before money changes hands.
Moving to Ontario
A vehicle brought in from another province needs a safety inspection before it can be registered and plated here.
Rebuilt vehicles
A vehicle previously branded unfit or rebuilt needs to pass inspection before it can legally return to the road.
Coming out of storage
If a vehicle has been off the road and the certificate has lapsed, a fresh inspection is required to plate it again.
Pre purchase peace of mind
Even when a certificate is not strictly required, an inspection before you buy is the cheapest insurance you can get on a used car.

How much does a safety inspection cost?
A flat $200 plus HST for all makes and models. There are no add on fees for the inspection itself. If repairs are needed to pass, those are quoted separately and you are never obligated to have us do them.
How long is the certificate valid?
An Ontario Safety Standards Certificate is valid for 36 days from the date of inspection. The vehicle needs to be registered or the ownership transferred inside that window, otherwise a new inspection is required.
Do I need an appointment?
An appointment is recommended so we can hold a hoist for you, but call anyway because same day and next day slots are often open. Call or text (819) 962-5888.
What happens if my vehicle fails?
You get a written list of every item that did not pass along with a repair quote. You are free to have us do the work or take the list to another shop. Once the items are corrected the vehicle is re inspected and the certificate is issued.
What do I need to bring?
The vehicle and the vehicle permit, also called the ownership. If you are buying privately the seller normally supplies the permit information. Make sure the spare tire, jack and any wheel lock key are in the vehicle, since missing equipment can hold up the inspection.
Is this the same as an emissions test?
No. A Safety Standards Certificate covers mechanical and structural condition such as brakes, steering, suspension, tires, lights and body integrity. Emissions testing is a separate program.
Can you do the repairs if it fails?
Yes. We are a full service garage, so brakes, tires, suspension, exhaust and rust repair all get handled in house. We also carry quality used parts through our recycling side, which often brings the cost of passing down considerably.
